New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) is dedicated to inspiring a love of dance
and enriching diverse audiences through its performances of contemporary
and classic chamber ballet masterpieces for adults and innovative
one-hour ballets for children.
Founded in 1978 by Diana Byer, NYTB is
the most widely seen chamber ballet company in the United States and has
been hailed by The New York Times’ Alastair Macaulay as “an invaluable
company”. Its performance roster includes the ballets "Sleeping Beauty,
Carnival of the Animals, The Nutcracker and a new production that will
debut in Spring 2013 of Bark in the Park by Chase Brock, choreographer
of Broadway's “hit” musical “Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark”. An NYTB
performance provides an intimate, live ballet experience for all
audiences.
“A miniature American treasure.”
--Dancemagazine
“The choreographers and the dancers are good storytellers,
and the dancing had an extra delicacy and look of refinement. But this
is, even more happily, a company of dancers who can act.”
--The New York
Times
“Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan’s brilliant costumes deserve to go into the
Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Initiative.”
-- Dancemagazine
“The costumes
(for Cinderella) are reminiscent of the most spectacular book
illustrations. The mobile sets are designed with simple charm.”
--NY Daily
News
“The program turned out to be one of those shows that are so good
they seem worth the price of the entire series of five attractions.”
--The
Sacramento Bee, CA
“This Cinderella tells the story clearly, neatly,
balancing charm, humor and sweetness, yet omits no essentials. The
production is worth trumpeting!"
--The Washington Post
“A clock that comes
alive and dances. Furniture that moves magically about…This Cinderella
will please grown-ups and children alike.”
--The New York Times
“…oversize
cutouts of toadstools, fiddlehead ferns and snails, studded with
understated green sparkles, are one of the production’s (Sleeping
Beauty) chief pleasures.”
--The New York Times
“The generous breadth of
taste shown by New York Theatre Ballet…..is good for New York’s whole
dance scene. Larger than the excellence of any one work here, which is
saying much, was the stylistic diversity of the program. I’ve been
grateful for this company before. I’ve never admired it more than on
this occasion.”
--The New York Times
“New York Theatre Ballet knows how to
delight audiences both young and old. With dazzling sets and suitably
complex, clear choreography performed by talented dancers, the company
gives the timeless tale of Cinderella a fresh face.”
